Steve Browne got his MA in anthropology in 1991 and took off for newly-liberated Poland, and spent the next 13 years knocking around Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He lived with people rebuilding once-flourishing countries which had been reduced to something like Third-world slums and worked with dissidents in countries still unfree. He marched with the people of Sofia, Bulgaria down the yellow brick road in the demonstrations that brought down the last coalition government, and marched for months with the people of Belgrade, Yugoslavia in the demonstrations against the Milosevic regime. He has smuggled cash to support the families of imprisoned dissident in Belarus, experienced the sensation of honest-to-God jackboots and rubber truncheons applies to tender places, and knows what the food tastes like in a certain Eastern European prison. (Plentiful and good actually but it sounds so cool.) In 1997 he was elected Honorary Member of the Yugoslav Movement for the Protection of Human Rights.With friends in Lithuania and the U.S. he founded the Language of Liberty English camps which gave rise to the Language of Liberty Institute which subsequently expanded operations to three continents. He didn't have anything to do with that, but he did recruit the guy who did.Along the way Steve started writing the stories he heard and lived for "journals of much passion and small circulation" in Prince Kropotkin's fortunate phrase, such as: traveling with cross-border traders and smugglers, interviewing the wife of a murdered dissident in Belarus, and covering the election that brought down the Milosevic regime from the streets of Belgrade. After giving these stories away or selling them for beer money even he could see this was dumb and returned to the U.S. to study journalism and mass communication theory on a graduate fellowship.Starting out in his new profession at an age most are poring over their retirement assets, he spent some years paying dues at small town newspapers in the Midwest. He currently has a newspaper column which is sometimes picked up by a Washington, D.C. think tank when he says something of interest to them.He currently lives in the upper Midwest with his two half-Polish children and Pearl, a puppy of mixed Shepherd, Labrador, and Border Collie ancestry according to the rescue clinic's best guess. There he spends his time writing, teaching martial arts, trying to stay out of trouble and occasionally working as a semi-professional consultant for people who haven't been able to.He writes from the perspective of a native Midwesterner who has seen more of the world than most and returned home to see it with new eyes. He thinks it "quite the most interesting foreign country he has lived in," a line he stole from Rudyard Kipling, he loves to kipple.For more than a decade he has desultorily maintained a blog, "Rants and Raves," at stephenwbrowne.com and has lately been branching out into a vlog "Rants and Raves" on Youtube.He is the author of "Word Pictures: English as it is REALLY used," a book for English students and teachers who are not native speakers, published in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and Novosibirsk, Russia. He is preparing "English Linguistic Humor: Puns, Play on Words, Spoonerisms, etc" based on a manuscript privately circulated in places like the University of Grodno and Moscow University.
